One of the most common psychological conditions closely related to suicides in older adults is depression. It is also one of the most unrecognized and least considered of the medical illnesses. It is one of the leading causes of the deaths of older adults in the United States, which further illustrates to us the undeniable need to reorient the treatment of the medical science on the issues and facets of older adult depression.

Depression from substance abuse, financial problems, or serious medical conditions deprives anyone of sober living. Thus, it is important to battle depression on older adults before it’s too late.

Degrees of Depression

There are varying degrees of depression; some of them are very easy to detect and are, therefore, not as dangerous and alarming as the others. These easy to detect types are easier to combat since they are very apparent to others, even to unspecialized individuals, who could easily address the problem by its very roots through immediate communication.

Unfortunately, there are the types which are very hard to detect and are so unapparent as to even signal normality. These types will not pose doubts or warnings to others as to the real mental and emotional situation of the person thereby leading to further escalation and more often than not, to suicidal attempts if not successful ones. One of these types is bsyndromal depression which is known for its characteristic ability to increase the risk of major depression since it lies in the almost subconscious and slowly creeps in but is most silent in its manifestations.

Symptoms of Depression

Usually however, depressive symptoms are not normal parts of aging. Instead the only feelings that are normally present are those intermittent mood states, or those of sadness, grief or loss which are mostly tentative in their duration. But when depressive symptoms are present, emotions quite similar to these are long lasting in their effects; they are much more prolonged and protracted. The latter ones, are harder to combat they being more persistent and greatly interfere with the individual’s ability to function in general.
